FAQ's and How to Join

Jasper, Tx- (Mar 17)  After 3 previous tournaments where cold and rain dominated the day, sunshine and warm temperatures were welcomed by the young anglers and captains of SETX as they set out to compete in the 4th leg of the FORD SETX HS Champions Series presented by Skeeter Boats. "We were due some good weather and with most of our kids being on Spring Break this week and able to do some pre fishing, we anticipate some good stringers tomorrow" said weigh master Ray Beck. "Water temperatures have slowly been creeping up to the mid 60's and that has the fish really making a push into shallower waters. No doubt, the next week or two is going to be really fun for bass fisherman on this lake." concluded Beck. 500 plus registered teams headed out early Saturday morning all across Big Sam hoping to claim the first place bounty.

Tackle Addict First Place Team- 20.21 LBS- Silsbee High School- Dylan Colvin and Morgan Roberts- Boat Captain Rodney Gordon

When it comes to fishing Sam Rayburn in mid March and over Spring Break, wise fisherman may want to follow a team from Silsbee around the lake because for the 2nd straight year, a team from Silsbee has claimed the 4th leg of the SETX trail which takes place over spring break. Having established a pattern during the week with practice, the Silsbee team of Roberts and Colvin team set out Saturday to duplicate what they had learned during the week. Launching at the public ramp down south, the team made a long run to the 147 area where they targeted hay grass and buck brush in the 2-3 foot range with flukes and senkos to gather their catch. By 8 am, the team had a limit from their first stop, including a 6 LB fish caught by Morgan. After arriving at their third spot at 9 am, the team began to cull some smaller fish, the biggest cull coming when Dylan was able to catch a 7 LB fish. "We had a blast today. The kids were very patient, sometimes waiting 10 seconds after a cast before even moving their bait. That takes a lot of discipline, but that is what it took today" said Capt. Gordon. "I want to thank Jesus for giving me the opportunity to share such an exciting experience on the water with these kids today, we made some great memories. Those kids worked as a team today and it payed off for them" concluded Capt. Gordon.

Second Place Team- 19.67 LBS- Friendswood High School- Johnnie Nemecek and Hunter Scott- Boat Captain John Scott

Lets face it, it is hard to fight to urge to fish shallow this time of year when so many fish are shallow, but that is exactly what these two experienced Seniors from Friendswood did last Saturday. Launching at Cassells Boykin and focusing on mid lake transition zones, the 2016 SETX Champions probed 12-20 foot depths to gather their nearly 20 LB stringer, anchored by a near 6 LB fish that came with only minutes left in their day. "The kids had a limit by 7:30 and were able to steadily cull up throughout the day" said Capt Scott. Banging a 6 XD off cover and dragging an Oldham 3/4 oz jig through the cover were the two primary ways the Seniors from Friendswood gathered their stringer. The team wished to thank their Lord and savior Jesus Christ, the FHS administration-Principal Mark Griffon, Coach Corey Truman, advisor Diane Nemecek, boat captains John Scott and John Nemecek and their sponsors- Triton-Mercury, Phoenix tires, DBG Services, DeeLu Land and Cattle, Folds of Honor, JTM Construction, Hookspit, Oldham Lures, and Power Tackle Rods. A big thank you also to the SETX Board, its volunteers for such a great organization that we are extremely proud to be a part of. And lastly, thank you to our service members around the world for keeping all of us safe and letting us enjoy this great sport.

Third Place Team- 18.82 LBS- Kirbyville High School- Braden Berryman and Brennon Davis- Boat Captain Hubert Davis Jr

Having done a little pre fishing the weekend before, this Senior team from Kirbyville had a pretty good plan to start their day. Launching at the public ramp down south, the team headed up the Angelina arm where they focused in on mid lake trees and brush in the 4-6 foot range. "We had a pretty good idea they would still be there and when we showed up, the fish did not disappoint" said Capt Davis. The team reported having their limit by 9 am and were able to cull up 3 times during the day to accumulate their nearly 19 LBS of fish. "We did not do anything out of the ordinary, we were just blessed to be where the fish were and they cooperated" concluded Davis. The team reported using carolina rigged lizards and flukes throughout the day to catch their fish. The team wished to thank everyone who helps out at the tournaments and everyone working to keep it going.
