FAQ's and How to Join

Jasper, Tx May 5-6- Here recently, it seems that momentum and confidence goes a long way in HS Fishing. Just last month, 2 teams from Hamshire Fannett wrapped up the SETX season with a 1-2 finish. This past Saturday, the LCM fishing team upped the ante as they took home the SETX HS Team of the Year trophy, edging out Hamshire Fannett by one single point. To top it off on Sunday, a couple of 8th graders from LCM added one more piece of hardware to the trophy case at LCM when they weighed in 22 LBS to add to their 20 LBS from the day before to claim the 5th Ford SETX Championship presented by Skeeter Boats.

Thousands crowded around Umphrey Pavilion on both Saturday and Sunday to get a glimpse of the young anglers from throughout Southeast Texas. "This is why we do what we do. This is the pinnacle of our season and our most exciting event" said tournament director and emcee John Salamone. "All of our sponsors are here, the kids and parents are excited, we are excited. We do our very best to make sure our kids remember this experience. It's just plain fun!" concluded Salamone.

"In short, this championship is really how SETX got it's start" said Board Member Tom Selman of Groves, Texas. "Since the beginning, even before we planned a trail, the championship was the main focus. We really wanted to make it a year end blowout and create a carnival type atmosphere around the pavilion with the help of all of our sponsors like Ford, Skeeter, Lews, Tackle Addict, Costa, Winn and others. Our trail tournaments are really good, but the championship is on an entirely different level and we do our best to make it memorable for everyone involved. We cant thank our sponsors enough for making this entire event possible. Without them, it is just another tournament" concluded Selman.

Day one concluded with beautiful weather and a very impressive 24.24 LB stringer brought in by the Bridge City team of Tanner Wilson and Ethan Bourque to claim the day one leader spot. It is the second year in a row the duo from Bridge City has held the number one spot after day one. After weigh in, the very first SETX school of the year trophy was presented to the team of LCM and their advisor Ms Nellie Miller. Throughout the season, the top 3 finishing teams from each school accumulated points according to place of finish in each tournament. Once those points were accumulated, a deserving LCM team squeaked by Hamshire Fannett by one single point. The trophy will be kept at LCM until next year's championship. Awards were also presented to the top 15 teams in the Angler of the Year race (Listed Below). To conclude the night, the Skeeter Demo team and Cooking Team prepared hot dogs and fixin's for all who stuck around for the washer and flipping contest underneath Umphrey Pavilion.

Tackle Addict First Place Team- $10,000.00, LEWS GEAR- 42.40 LBS- LCM- Tyler Shearin and Kameryn Henderson- Boat Captain Lee Shearin

There is something to be said for consistency in bass fishing and during a two day tournament, consistency is of paramount importance. While most teams in the top ten after day one saw their weights plummet on day two, two 8th graders from LCM actually improved their catch to capture the 5th Ford SETX Championship presented by Skeeter Boats. "It was just our weekend" said boat captain Lee Shearin. "The boys caught fish all day on both days. They even caught fish that other anglers were passing over as we fished behind many boats". When asked about anything the 2 eighth graders from LCM may have been doing differently to attract those bites, Capt Shearin was quick to point out that the boys were extremely patient and fished very slowly. "Most of our fish came on a Texas rigged worm. We caught a few on jigs and a carolina rig as well, but the key was the slow speed" continued Capt. Shearin. Launching in the Attoyac and fishing mid lake areas in the 2-6 foot range, the team sacked up 20 LBS on Saturday with a limit coming at 11:30 and backed it up with 22 LBS on Sunday when they captured a limit by 7:30, for a total of 42.40 LBS. "This just puts the icing on a great weekend not only for us, but the LCM bass team as well in winning the School of the Year Trophy. We want to thank Ms Nellie Miller for all of her help and work she has put in for the LCM team. We also want to make sure we tip our hat to the 2nd place team from Bridge City and their Captain, Darren Wilson. I know Darren and he is about as solid a guy as you will find and obviously a great captain as well" concluded Shearin. The team also wished to thank Primo Rods, Rambo Outdoors, Granger Chevrolet, and all of the LCM Sponsors. And lastly, the team wished thank all the volunteers at SETX for putting on the most competitive HS tournament in the country.

2nd Place Team- $8000.00 (LEWS GEAR)- 39.81 LBS- Bridge City- Ethan Bourque and Tanner Wilson- Boat Captain Darren Wilson

Sometimes bass fishing can be just flat our cruel. Then again, there are plenty of others out there who would have loved to be in the shoes of these two sophomore anglers from Bridge City, because for the 2nd year in a row, they carried the day one lead into day two, only to see it disappear in the waning moments on Sunday. On one hand, there is heartbreak, on the other, there is the fact that you gotta be a pretty darned good team to put yourself in that position for 2 consecutive years. With Tanner having having a baseball game is Jasper Friday night and Ethan having a broke foot, the team did not get to do any pre fishing, but did just fine without it. Launching at Twin Dikes and focusing on shelf's and hard breaks in the 10-25 foot range on the lower end of the lake, the team was able to bring 24.24 LBS to the scales on Saturday to claim the #1 spot going into Championship Sunday. "Looking back, we probably should have stayed on our primary spot on Saturday. We came back about 30 minutes later after leaving it and another boat was sitting on it. Who knows, maybe we could have culled up to 26 or 27 LBS that first day" said Captain Darren Wilson. On Sunday the team made it a point to arrive to this spot early, but as they idled up, another boat was approaching the same area. "The other boat let us have it! I am hoping they realized we were the day one leaders and conceded the spot, which is customary in competitive bass fishing. If they did, a tip of the cap to that team." continued Wilson. Wilson went on to say that the 2 big fish (one being an 8.56 and big fish of the tournament) caught early on Saturday boosted the teams confidence to a new level by letting them know they were in the right spot to win the tournament. "Both of those boys fished hard and with a lot of confidence after catching those 2 fish Saturday morning. I am very proud of their efforts. We also want to congratulate the team from LCM with a solid bag of fish. What a great opportunity to see our kids enjoying the sport and meeting new friends from other schools. Heck Yeah, how awesome is that" concluded Wilson. The team wished to thank the Good Lord, Ms Nikki Harris, SETX Volunteers, Granger Chevrolet, Lews, our military and police officers, Mechelle Wilson of Allstate in Buna, Anthony Toups at classic Chevy, Henry Adams at Leak Sealers and ITS.

3rd Place Team- $7000.00 (LEWS GEAR)- 35.07 LBS- Kirbyville- Braden Berryman and Brennon Davis- Captains Hubert Davis and Trey Berryman

Look in the top 30 of any SETX tournament in 2018 and chances are you will find the names Berryman and Davis. For the past couple years, these two Seniors from Kirbyville seem to always be in the mix at the end of every SETX event. The same held true this past weekend as they brought in nearly 19 LBS on Saturday and a solid 16 on Sunday for a 35.07 bag and a third place finish. Sharing the boat captain duties were the father's of each angler, Trey Berryman on Saturday and Hubert Davis on Sunday. The team reported using a multitude of baits and taking advantage of an early morning top water bite to get things started quickly on each day. "We had limits early on both days using Spro frogs in shallow cover and around hay grass" said Capt Davis. Launching at Monterrey on Saturday, the team fished the upper reaches of the lake, but launched down south at the public ramp on Sunday and fished the mid lake region. "After the morning bite, we backed off into 20-25 feet of water on main lake points and threw Carolina rigged flukes, lizards, and a jig. We culled throughout the day, but the best culls came with 30-45 minutes left in the day" said Capt Berryman. The team wished to thank God, Clint and Amy Fountain, all the SETX volunteers and SETX board members. Kirbyville's team sponsors and all the SETX sponsors, and remember to get kids hooked on fishing, not drugs!!

SETX HS TEAM OF THE YEAR- $3000.00- LCM Fishing Team

In its inaugural year, the SETX HS Team of the Year Trophy went to the team of Little Cypress Mauriceville. After each qualifying tournament (5 in all), the top three finishing teams from each HS are awarded points. Those points are tallied and totaled at the end of the season to determine an overall winner. The team with the highest amount of points this season was LCM. "The race could not have been any closer between LCM and Hamshire Fannett. It quite literally came down to the final weigh in at our final qualifying tournament in April, both Hamsire and LCM are to be commended for great seasons" said SETX President Bryan Thomas. The award recognizes consistency over all 5 tournaments and the LCM team demonstrated that throughout the season by continuously placing 3 teams inside the top 30 in the SETX qualifying tournaments. The huge trophy and a $3000 check to the LCM Fishing Team was presented to Ms Nellie Miller, the LCM advisor, in front of a tremendous crowd on Saturday evening after the day one weigh in. The trophy has been deemed a traveling trophy and will remain with the LCM Fishing team for an entire year before they defend their title in 2019. Congrats to Ms Nellie Miller and the entire LCM Bass Fishing team for truly great accomplishment and topping the field of 46 different high schools from throughout Southeast Texas.
