Central Heights Team Claims 2015 Championship

Jasper, Tx (June 13-14)- 250+ HS Fishing Teams teams converged on Sam Rayburn this past weekend to compete in the 2nd annual Ford SETX HS Championship presented by Skeeter Boats. Winning a tournament, finishing in the top 50, or fishing all five qualifying tournaments would qualify teams for the championship, where over $75,000 in scholarships alone would be given away.

The weekend began with a Friday night awards banquet and tournament meeting at Brookeland HS. SETX proudly welcomed the Skeeter Boats Demo team and various other sponsors to the event. Superintendent Kevin McCugh of Brookeland ISD was excited for the opportunity to help SETX in hosting the event. The hospitality shown by Mr McCugh and Brookeland ISD is greatly appreciated by everyone involved with SETX. Thank you Mr McCugh and Brookeland ISD!

Hudson Team Claims SETX Season Finale

Jasper, Tx May 17- Impending thunderstorms, high winds, and water were some of the obstacles Mother Nature threw at almost 340 SETX teams last Sunday as the SETX HS Fishing Association hosted their final qualifying event in the Ford Championship Series presented by Skeeter Boats. "The kids and captains are going to have to overcome a few obstacles today" said SETX President Bryan Thomas. "Our boat captains have a huge responsibility today, but it is days like today when they can really teach our anglers good safety habits on the water. As a kid, you tend to remember days like today more than the others" Thomas continued. Getting off to a good start with the morning bite would be critical for all the teams, because in all likelihood, the mid day and afternoon would see many of them scrambling from the incoming storms and having to fish where they could, not where they want. One thing is for sure, all of our top 3 teams shared a common trait on Sunday, they made the best of a bad situation (high winds) and turned the obstacle into opportunity.

Shepherd team notches win on Rayburn

Jasper, Tx. April 11---On a weekend when weather was a very big question mark and local forecasters were predicting heavy downpours, Mother Nature had other ideas, as she smiled down on the kids and captains of SETX and provided them with abundant sunshine and warm temperatures. A swollen Sam Rayburn Reservoir greeted over 350 teams from 40 different high schools across Southeast Texas as they participated in the 4th of 5 qualifying tournaments in the Ford/Skeeter SETX HS Championship Series. Teams scattered out over the nearly 200,000 acre impoundment to gather the heaviest 5 bass and bring them back to the Umphrey Family Pavilion to compare their catches to the rest of the field. Ms Jade Bucholz, an 8th grader from Hamshire Fannett. got things started with an absolutely stirring rendition of our national anthem.

Bridge City Team Conquers Big Sam

Jasper, TX- Mar. 28 Warm Spring temperatures and warming high water greeted over 350 teams from 40+ high schools across Southeast Texas as they participated in the third of five qualifying events on the Ford/Skeeter SETX HS Fishing Association trail this past Saturday. After two weeks of downpours in East Texas, the lake known as “Big Sam” in the bass fishing world was even bigger as the lake was nearing 5 and a half feet above normal pool. What was high and dry just 3 weeks prior, was now inundated with 5+ foot of water and the “new lake” created several challenges to the young anglers. But as always, someone always figures them out and that is just what the Bridge City team of Trey Lee and Randy Underwood did as they brought nearly 17lbs of Big Sam bass back to the Umphrey Family Pavilion on Saturday.
